Waltzing Matilda é a canção folclórica mais popular da Austrália. 

Muitos australianos consideram-na mesmo como um segundo hino nacional, ou uma alternativa ao oficial Advance Australia Fair. 

Sua letra foi escrita em 1895 pelo poeta Banjo Paterson.

personagens históricos australianos que viajavam pelo país a procura de trabalho, vestindo um chapéu, geralmente com rolhas penduradas à sua aba, para espantar as moscas nas regiões mais remotas. 

Sua swag era algo como uma trouxa contendo os seus pertences.

waltzing derivada da expressão alemã auf der Walz, que define o antigo costume de artesãos de viajar por 3 anos e 1 dia, aprendendo com outros mestres novas técnicas, um costume ainda hoje praticado por carpinteiros.

Matilda um termo mais "carinhoso" para a "trouxa" carregada pelo swagman. 

Supõe-se que à trouxa foi dado um nome de mulher por esta ser a única "companheira" do swagman durante suas longas jornadas.

Waltzing Matilda como deduz-se dos termos já mencionados acima, significa viajar pelo país à maneira de um swagman, com os pertences embrulhados por um pano, carregado nas costas.

billabong um lago com águas estagnadas derivadas de um rio. 

É algo como um braço de rio que não desagua em lugar algum.

coolibah tree uma espécie de árvore (eucalipto) que cresce nas proximidades de um billabong, nativa da Austrália.

jumbuck nome dado pelos aborígenes australianos ao carneiro.

billy uma lata onde se ferve água, com volume de cerca de 1,5 litros.

tucker bag um saco para carregar alimentos.

troopers policiais.

squatter pioneiros colonos australianos que começaram a criar gado em terras que não lhes pertenciam, mas das quais acabaram conseguindo, em muitos casos, posse legal, e enriqueceram graças às suas extensas terras.
